Swedish specialty steel producer SSAB has announced that its U.S. subsidiary, SSAB Americas, together with The Greenbrier Companies and Alter Trading, has launched a circular economy initiative aimed at demonstrating the continuous use of recycled materials in steel production. The initiative began at SSAB’s Iowa facility, where the company produces SSAB Zero™ steel using recycled metal and fossil-free energy. According to the company, SSAB Zero™ steel has near-zero fossil carbon emissions and is produced without relying on carbon offsets. This steel product forms the foundation of a new circular economy partnership among the three companies. As part of the project, Greenbrier will manufacture 50 open-top railcars using SSAB Zero™ steel. Once in service, the railcars will transport recycled metal from AlterTrading’s facilities back to SSAB’s steel mill, where the material will be reintroduced into the production process.
According to the partner, this model relies on verifiable production processes, a mature logistics network, and traceability systems capable of tracking the flow of recycled materials throughout the supply chain.
